12v. power point

Has anyone installed a 12volt power outlet in the flip-up sunglasses compartment in the dash where the optional MB phone would have been? Seem like a good spot to put my V.60 phone or to hook up a radar detector. Taking out the false back I found that there are three cords that normally hook up to the MB phone – two have wider multi-contact plugs and one is a narrow bayonet plug. Does anyone have a wire diagram showing what these wires do? Has anyone done this before? Any information would be appreciated.

This can be done very easily.

You need to go to the dealer and get the "keys" to take out the radio and heater unit (under $10), then it is an easy matter to remove the ash tray, remove the phone box (screws in back), drill a hole in the back, route the wire behind the dash, and tap into the 12 volt power at the cig. lighter.

I installed a Sirius radio this way, and put a 12 v. under the passenger side of the dash board. See this thread:

I also have a radar detector, but I just use it on long trips, so I keep it in the center console and only put it out when I need it.

Plug

Thanks for the suggestion.

On the same topic, does anyone know if it is possible (and how) to splice a 12v. power plug into one of the two wires that have 12 point plugs for the phone?
