Advice on buying a 1991 500sl AMG

Hi. Hopefully you can help. I haven't owned a Mercedes since I sold my 1977 convertible a few years ago, and now I've got my eye on a newer one. It's a 1991 500sl AMG edition. Just a few quick questions...

Is the AMG version in this year actually tuned differently with higher hp, or is it just an exhaust / body kit / wheels modification?

I took this vehicle for a test drive, it's very tight, but occasionally, when I hit the turn signal, the seat-belt light turns on. Any idea what this could be? And any general advice on whether or not these are good cars to purchase in that model year? Thanks a bunch...

1991 500sl

The AMG version, if it was offered in 1991, would have been nothing more than bodykit, wheels, etc...as are all R129 AMG versions.

Regarding the warning light, I cannot help you.

Regarding the reliability question, my 1991 500SL has over 192K miles and has been extremely reliable and enjoyable. Just make sure all the fluids / maintenance schedule have been kept up as needed or you may be in for far more expense than usual.

Good luck!

Thanks. I thought it was probably just a bodykit. The car is imported from Japan, and only has 45,000 miles, looks to be well-maintained, and drives very tight. I guess the occasional electrical gremlin is probably to be expected.

Japan model

The Japan models are not usually approved for US safety standards. You cannot import them unless it is by an approved "Registered Importer" (RI). Find out how much it will cost to convert the vehicle first. Won't be such a bargain than. But the 385 hp engine would be nice to have here. I had the info on what you needed to do but my computer crashed and lost my data.

Luckily, I'm in Canada, where we can import from Japan if the vehicle is 15 years old. I think the USA rule is 25 years. As long as it passes local safety regulations, I can legally drive it. This particular car has already been inspected and is legal.

Thanks for your post!
