sorry for the short sentences , I have never asked for info this way . I have done nothing to compromise the hydraulic system . I have only done visual on system components . Nothing has been taken apart at this time. The roof goes 1/2 way up and stops when activating the switch on console and some times after reversing the roof it goes back down and then all the way up and lands and locks and the windows activate and the roll bar activates and the top works , (sometimes). When looking at the left side I noticed a wire with a slotted plastic end lying loose so I slipped it back into the brakt , This did nothing to remedy the top or effect it negatively. I have down loaded your literature and have read it , it is awesome , Thank you , When I got the car last week the red top switch kept coming on and I would hit it again a second time when the roof was in the installed position and the red light would go out , I guessing that I need to get the factory repair manual so that I can better diagnose the functions. I have replaced all the brakes and wheel bearing and if I had clear direction will try to figure the top out . I have put the Hard top on and it has no problems , Thank you Klaus for any help you can give me , I live in Portland and can allways go south , Thank you

(The wire is off the left tonneau cover lock cylinder ) clarification and I have found the left bow cylinder with the microswitch , visual looks like the book and is not loose or broken , what function does the switch do ? the literature says it hits the switch when the cylinder is in the closed position , would a bad switch cause the top to stop 1/2 way up ? or a frozen left cylinder ? Thanks all

roof goes up 1/2 way

I have a r-129 that the roof goes up 1/2 way ( sometimes it goes all the way and the windows go up and down and the roll bar activates) found a loose connection on the left tonneau cover lock cylinder and put it back on but nothing changed, top still goes 1/2 way. I have not compromised the hydraulic system or taken any thing apart . All I have done is changed out discs and pads and all the wheel bearing . I have done a visual inspection and have not seen any oil and have checked the pump and level . Tonight I looked for the left bow cylinder and every thing looks ok switch is on and not smashed ,I am going to check top of bow cylinder again to see if there is a trace of fluid Thanks Klaus

it looks like the left bow extension micro switch was never the problem and had never been removed - thanks for the clarification. If there is still any wire off the tonneau cover lock or having poor contact, then that obviously needs to be fixed.

There is a white switch inside the storage compartment on the left side that the soft top rests on when it is stored. Wiggle that switch by hand next time your soft top stops at the high position.

The red light coming on when the soft top is up and not coming on when the hard top is up could be a separate issue. It is usually related to the front locks needing adjustment. See http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129...-switches.html for an in-depth description of that issue.

If you cannot resolve these issues by double checking the wiring on the tonneau cover lock, wiggling the "soft top stored" switch, and following the procedures in the above mentioned thread, then you should have someone read the soft top error codes. You could also build a code reader yourself after reading up a little in http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129...ml#post2419223.

In reference to hyd-fluid coming from your visor is the power convertable top fluid cylinders are leaking at the usual rubber oil ring at the hydraulic piston. there are some kits you can find on the internet and a good youtube video on how to do the job to replace the O rings

Do you still drive a R129?

I still have the 1999 SL 500 we bought in 2002. 240,000 Km (150,000 miles) ... she still runs like brand new and delivers an exciting driving experience every time out.
