Wow.... I want that 10 minutes of my life back.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the last hash mark on the speedometer of an SL600 would be the 160MPH mark; therefore the second last hashmark would be 140MPH. If that that is true I don't think the driver even make 140MPH in that first video.
As for the second video. Technically speaking isn't the v12 supposed at least beat out the V6 based on physics and theory alone???? Makes you wonder why you'd by the SL600 (from a performance standpoint) when you can have a V6 that's about the same.

You guys are completely missing the point. That M3 is the E46 M3 which does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and the SL600 was almost dead even with that car all the way to 60mph. That is a staggering fact in itself. Thats truly amazing the SL600 (especially the older heavier models) kept up so well with the M3, with a few minor mods that thing could beat an E46 M3. thats huge!

Well, considering that the SL is quite old and that M3 is an E46 changes everything. That race was very close and shows that the older SL's can still hang with the newer sports cars.

You have to remember the SL is a completely different car than the M3.

A buddy of mine just purchased a 2007 BMW 335. It has about 300 h.p. My 2001 SL 500 has about 300 h.p. I have V8; he has inline six.
R129 weighs about 800 pounds more, I think. He has paddle shifters. He goes to 60 about a second faster.
I am think that SL 600 could weigh close to 1000 pounds more than 2005 M3. At least 500 pounds. I think the SL had a four speed automatic. M3 I think had 6 speed manual (???).
Anyways -- you can never just look at engine size to determine who is faster.

NO! Are you serious? The acceleration is a matter of weight, torque, horsepower, gearing, traction, and a whole bunch of other crap that an engineer could explain.

I was hoping for an ignorant explanation from chixdiggit however.
