1991 500sl instrument cluster removal

does the 1991 500sl have a speedometer cable or is it electric. Trying to remove the cluster but will only come out about 2 inches. wondering if cable, etc. has to be disconnected first. please advise thanks

Instrument cluster

Fredi,
Its electronic on later models for sure (mine is 1992 (129-066) and is), not sure about 1991 but expect so, others should be able to confirm or deny.

On mine there is a tiny button in the middle of the odo reset that if you push at key on for about 10s puts it in diagnostic mode. Repeatedly press this and it goes thru a sequence of tests, and the instruments all magically start reading. Last one is the most fun, you get 7000rpm, 260kph, a full tank and only using 7km/l!!
Video I have of disassembly suggests putting your hand up under and pushing from the back if its stiff to come out, and hooks at each side.

Just keep pulling gently it's probably stuck... you need to wiggle it out rather than pull in one direction. It'll come out, its just very stiff the first time. There are pin connectors at the back, no loose cables or anything screwed in.

I was worried when I did mine, you just need to be brave.

1991 mercedes instrument cluster reset

Hi Greg - I was thrilled to find your post about the button in the odo reset. I tried the process 1st thing this am, but no joy, the gauges are all still inop. Is there a particular order for the process? i.e., key on first then button or hold button then then key on, or should I start the engine? Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Duane (Glakes1)
