3M Film, Paint Protector

HI All,
Anyone have the 3M Film paint protector (or like product) on their car?

I am having trouble finding someone (Nor CA) that actually has a kit for a 1999-2002 SL (Most have the 2003 style).

Also looking for how it protects against rocks.

I am having my hood and fenders repainted due to rock chips and want to get this protection.

Any input is appreciated.

Side note...took the hardtop off yesterday and it rained today in the Bay area....don't tell me global warming hasn't impacted the weather....this is the latest i have taken my hard top off!!!!

3M film

I have the film on a 95 SL320 which is for sale and on a 2000 SL500. The 500 was done by a guy in Santa Rosa who did really excellent work, but he's not cheap. It was over $600 for the hood. front bumper, mirrors, windshield pillars, and door handle recesses. Let me know if you are willing to spend that much and I'll dig through my records to get the guy's phone number.
How much did you get for the SL320 you sold?

I dealt with Quinn, the owner of AutoSport Detailing (Marco did the work)
3093 Wiljan Ct, Ste D, Santa Rosa 707/579-3710
$695 std kit front bumper, hood, fenders, headlight, fogs, and mirrors
$50 A pillars
$50 doors edges and door handle recesses +8% sales tax

If you dan't want to travel all the way to SR, the secret to finding the 3M installers is to go to or call the window tinting shops.
There are other products besides 3M. I don't know how good they are. Many probably are made by 3M and rebranded though. This took almost all day to do the work.

As far as film brands go you almost have to take whatever brand the installer you find uses. A good installer is more important then the film here. I prefer a custom cut over a machine cut kit b/c it allows for all edges to be wrapped where pre-cut might wrap the leading edge or not at all. The edges are the thinnest part of the paint and they need the protection. My guy here in Fort Worth has experience with the 3 brands (3M, Venture, Llumar) and I've had all three. IMHO 3M is my last choice b/c it's the least optically clear, it is slightly yellow and continues to slowly yellow more over time. Llumar is the most clear and doesn't seem to yellow noticably, Venture is somewhere in between the two. I have Llumar on my SL and Venture on my Jeep SRT8. The only reason I have Venture on the Jeep is b/c my installer couldn't get any Llumar last August due to a manufacturing problem that Llumar was having at the time. This problem did not effect the film once installed but it did effect shelf life of the roll once the roll was started (it was a problem with the release liner that gets peeled off during installation and once a roll's initial tension was released the film needed to be installed within a month or it would be ruined). My installer buys partial rolls and during this time the supplier would not sell partial rolls.

Looks like i will choose the folks at premier. They are close by and have handled o good number of cars...Santa Rosa would be a haul for me, but i appreciate your info and advice.

They use several brands but probably Venture on mine. The Silver Arrow goes in the shop monday for painting (pillars, hood, bumper and one fender)and then i will wait 30 nerve racking days praying i don't get any chips while the paint cures.
