New Owner Tire Questions

I just acquired a 1997 SL500 Sport. The previous owner removed the AMG wheels and replaced with with the regular wheel and tires that gave a softer ride. I want to replace the tires but am undecided weather to put the AMG wheels and larger tires on the car or keep the regular wheel. In both cases our primary concern would be noise and ride comfort rather than handling. Also, what seems to the the best all season tire that meets this need.

I Stayed with Michelin Pilot Sports

I live in San Diego and drive mostly with the top down, so I can't hear any noise from the tires due to the wind. The ride on my Michelin Pilot Sports is very comfortable when the road is smooth, but the steering jumps quite a bit when the road is bumpy. I'm not sure how much of that is due to the tire verus the car. No snow or ice here.

I have a Honda Accord for my daily driver, and it is very smooth though not as quiet as I would like. So I'll stick to my AMG wheels and the Pilot Sports for my weekend fun in the SL.

Dunlop SP Sport 9000 tires with AMG wheels...much better ride over the stockers.

get some AMG rims to put on there. Road noise isn't that bad. Tire choice also contributes to the road noise and comfort and even then it's not that bad of a difference.

SP9000 are a good choice, but I prefer not to spend that much on tires. Nitto NT555 aren't too bad and neither are Yokohama ES100 [using that now]. Dunlop FM901's are great if you can still find them [nice and sticky]

I'm assuming the wheels you have on there now are 17" 5 spokes?
