Want to buy a sl 600 2004 . Need advice
Hi
We want to buy a sl 600 2004 v12.
We love the car, trading in our 04 slk 320
Our problem is everyone tells us if you need service after the warrenty ends
its very very expense.
Are there items that go out.. Wonder how long the twin turbos will last.
The car rides great and everything seems to check out.
Does the normal maintance thats needed that expense on this car.
If you have any thoughts and real life expericene with this please let us know.
THanks

I have heard the same thing, but am not sure I agree that the engine will be the component that makes the car expensive to maintain. The engine has only been around for about 4-5 years and I have yet to read about anyone having a major engine problem. I imagine that any major engine problem would be expensive to fix, and I do not think the TT V12 will be an exception. However, I can't see why it should be so much more expensive to repair than any other high-performance engine. It is still early days for this engine...be sure to maintain it properly.
You are much more likely to have a problem with some of the other subsystems, which are shared by all the other R230s and other Benzes for that matter. In this regard, I believe the SL600 should be no more expensive to maintain than the other R230s.
So far normal maintenance has not been very expensive.
Would you be asking the same question about post-warranty maintenance costs if you were considering a 2004 SL500 rather than an SL600? I would bet they will cost about the same to maintain.
Depreciation for the SL600 is another story, but with an '04, that shouldn't be to much of an issue at this point.

MBWorld Fanatic!
I'm not sure why the flippant response.
The V12 does have some expensive habits, like springing an oil leak that requires pulling the engine to repair. The turbochargers are probably pretty bullet proof.
ABC tends to be trouble-prone and expensive to fix as well. I wouldn't get one of these cars without an extended warranty (preferably the CPO kind with coverage of 7 years from original delivery). That's true of most MBs, and a bit more so of the V12s. FWIW, the turbocharged V12s seem less trouble-prone than the earlier ones. For instance, there were major ignition coil problems early on that got fixed by 2003.
