Hi,
I have a 1991 500SL with 202K miles on it and had my timing chain break at about 155K.
Fortunately, I had just started the car and heard a strange noise so I immediately shut it off and had it towed in to my mechanic. He said I was lucky I was not driving it at the time as serious damage could have occured.
Also, if I remember correctly, I think MB states somewhere in their literature for the SL that the chain should be replaced before 150K...

When to replace timing chain ???
I've searched the whole forum, but can't find a definite way to tell when to replace the timing chain, except for "regularly scheduled maintenance". Some say a clanking sound like this:
develops, only one says theirs broke. Can I wait until it starts sounding different ??? Have 128K miles, running fine...
