Leather repairs on 1999 SL500

I'm interested in this vehicle that was a 1 owner w/60,000 miles. The dealer 200 miles from me says both seats need repairs when your butt rubs the side of the seat getting in the car. Also, he says there is a tear in the leather that is behind the passenger seat on what may be where the top retracts to. He says a local guy can replace one panel on each seat but I doubt it will match (gray).

What would it cost to recover both seats and would it match the other leather in the car close enough?

Could the tear behind the passenger seat be mended by a good leather upholstery shop?

Its usually cheapest to replace the leather with pre-made seat covers as apposed to someone creating the patterns themselves and installing them. Do a search on google, there are several reputable companies out there who specialize in this.

Also, many of these cars were equipped with MB Text, a synthetic leather that is proprietary to mercedes, you cant really tell the difference aside from it lasting damn near forever. I would look into that before i did anything.

I had to have the driver side outside seat bolster repaired on my 96 SL. The cost was only $300 and it looks perfect. I would recommend finding a high quality upholstery shop in your area and get a quote to replace the damaged leather. For those in the DFW area I can recommend an excellent upholstery shop.

Any way to tell via VIN or body codes?

I would assume so, but you would have to contact a dealer to be sure.

1999 is the first year after Chrysler took over the benz!
I would just get a custom made set of sheepskin covers ($399-499) and make it easy. You'll also enjoy the higher seat feel and none-slippery, warm surface .
