500sl using built in Audio Amplifier!

I am installing an aftermarket mp3 player in my 1990 500sl (r129) the original system was not in the car when purchased it had a cheap radio in place. I need to know if I can hook up the new mp3 player using the existing built in Amplifier for the speaker system. Or would it be easier ust to snip the wires and go direct?

if your new head unit has line outs, use those to go to the amplifier, which likely has in place the appropriate crossovers, etc. to split the spectrum and direct it to the appropriate drivers (subwoofer, etc.).

but thats this the thing there is no line out plugs nothing. all I have managed to find is the power cable and power antenna lead and aerial cord the rest are just color coded wires coming in the front. from what I have read the amplifier is built in to the main computer box under the rear " seat" which so I dont want to go touching wires and messing that up I need to know which is the exact color coded ones

I don't think your car has this system. If you describe in detail the wires that you have (color of wire/color of stripe) to connect to, then maybe I or someone else can tell you what they are.

if you are in the US, just take it to circuti city or bestbuy and they will install a new stereo for you...circurity installs for free when you buy a stereo over $99. Get one with mp3 in jack.

That way you get a lifetime warranty if something goes bad with the stereo install, backed by a major company

I believe most installers don't realize that the early U.S. systems are bi-amplified: the radio's power amplifier drives the tweeters in the dash and the mid-ranges in the doors, and a line-level signal from the radio feeds a power amplifier located in the passenger footwell that drives the woofers. Consequently, the crossover network lacks electrical components that would normally be included in a design that operates with a single power amplifier, and with a single amplifier the resulting sound quality may suffer noticeably -- or maybe not.

I will have to check the color co-ordinates. But I traced the wires from the sub mounted on the door cause it has the six way sound system and all the wiring leads to one big control unit in rear passenger well. so I am assuming it has a built in Amplifier there ( the manual also makes mention of this) so I would just need to find the input wires for this amp and all should work well ....right?
