Best nineteen grand I have ever spent
It has now been six months since I found the car I was looking for on eBay. It was the right Year (97, which was the first year of the auto 5 speed) it was correct color (black on black) it had the options I was looking for (Pano, halogen, & factory ground effects), it had few enough miles (44,000), it had been on the west coast it's whole life (no salt issues), it was in my price range (under $20,000.00),& its documentation & condition were spot on.
This car has actually added a quality to my life I did not even know I wanted. By this I am not referring to the actual quality of the car (though of course the car is just ****) but to the enjoyment it brings to me when I kick the dozen chambers in the azz. EVERY time I get out of my car I am smiling. I've got to be careful, for if this goes on much longer my reputation as a sarcastic bitter little man will be shot to hell. I knew I was getting a lot of car for my $$, but to be honest I had no idea . It cost me $85.00 bucks to fill it once a week, & if it cost me four times that I would still be driving the wheels of this thing.
Anyhow, I just wanted to preach to the choir about my R129. Keep 'em clean, & drive them hard.

Obviously I was misinformed about the debut year of the 5 speed. I was told the pre 97 sl600 were a little flat off the start because of the taller low gear in the auto four speed offered for that model in those years. From this (miss)info I presumed that 97 was the first year of the auto 5 speed. Thank You for pointing out error I made.

I have an '02 v8 sl 500, and it I'm spending the same on gas every week. Either the v12 is extraordinarily efficient, or my leadfootedness is remarkably consistent in the face of escalating gas prices!
