Compy reprogramming

Hi fellas.

Okay, so I just purchased a '92 500SL. Now I haven't taken it to it's 155 mph limit (speed) and of course I don't plan on it but, you never know if there will be a nuclear exchange with "Iran" and should I need to outrun a shockwave... I would like to have that ability... just in case.

How can I or is there anyone in the San Francisco bay area who could remove the speed limiter on my car as what is it capable of? 180 something?

Muchos garcias!

R129 SL500's are capable of getting up into the 170+ range when delimited. Any reputable ECU upgrade removes the speed limiter. Shoot them an email and see if they offer a chip for the '92 model.

Have you used them? Their price is certainly nice...less than 1/2 of Powerchips' tune.

I haven't. Read some very positive reviews about them though. I don't see why ECU tuning is expensive ($900 for a Power Chip) for these older cars. It is literally plug and play by swapping out two chips, unlike the modern Merc's which require re-flashing. SpeedTuning at least offers a more manageable price. If I didn't have to replace my effin' cats and starter module, I would have had a nice budget for some upgrades. Guess I'll have to settle with just 400 bhp.

What year is your car? I just got a letter in the mail from MBUSA telling me they got sued for defective manufacturing on the SL600 cats, and are now extending the factory warranty on them to 10yrs/100k. My car is a 2001, and the letter states it covers 1999 or 2000 through 2002. I can scan and send it to you if you want.

I appreciate that very much, but mine is a '97, so the warranty would have already been expired. They failed after 11 years and 57,000 miles. Those direct fit replacements saved me a ton as well. Thank you for the offer though.

Oh that's right, I forgot you already replaced them. Nevermind.

I may give speedtuning a shot.

Post up the results if you go with it. The great thing is that an a more aggressive map for this car is literally plug and play.
