Normally, I can just pull the hood release under the symbol in the center, and the hood releases. Now, it only pulls part way by hand. I don't want to use any tools on the hand grip, how can I get to the release mechanism ???

Not to sound stupid, but I reckon you pull the handle beside the park brake pedal first.

Well, since you're another newby, I'll admit to you that yes, that was the main problem. It was a little sticky, so I oiled all the moving parts...

Works fine now !!! Thank for your (obvious) suggestion !!!
