driver's heated seat inop

the driver's side heated seat is not working on my 97 SL500. the button lights up but no heat. thinking I probably need to replace the heat pad under the seat cover. But thought to ask if there is anything else I should check first before going through the trouble of removing the cover and replacing the heat pad. thanks for your comments

drivers heated seat not working

Did you ever learn what was wrong with your heated seat. I have the same problem with my driver's side seat - indicator lights come on, but no heat

No, I haven't had a chance to work on mine yet. (I bought my '01 recently and only had a few days to drive it before our weather turned unusually nasty. Its now sleeping in the garage for the rest of the winter.)

After spending more time searching the forum, I have come to the conclusions that:
a) the heating elements are a common point of failure.
b) repair is costly because the heat pad is integral to the pad or leather and can't be replaced on its own.
c) alternatively, aftermarket heating pads, such as those from heatedseatskits.com, could be placed under the leather and wired in place of the original element.

I'm seriously considering option c. Even though I park my toy for the winter, there is still lots of spring and fall weather where the heated seats could help extend the top-down driving season.

Thanks. I just got my '01 last month and bought it with a 3 year warranty that covers the entire electrical system. Wonder if the heated seats will be included? For a $100 deductible, it would be worth fixing. Thanks! There's snow on the ground by me but once its clear, you'll bet i'll be driving mine around town, top up of course for now. Thanks for the feedback and enjoy yours.
