SL/R129: When were the headlights updated?

When were the headlights updated?
I am looking at a 1998 SL500 for sale, and I am wondering when the headlight update was done...to the projectors. I thought it was in 1998, or was it still only an option that year? Reason I ask is because this supposed '98 has the older lights on it. Have a look and let me know.

i think it was an option untill 2000? 2002?

I believe you could get Xenon's as an option from 98-02. I have them on my 2000 SL. In 2000 they also came with what was known as the SL2 Option Package= Xenon's, CD changer, Heated Seats.

xenons were an option beginning with the '96 facelift. I know because I have them on mine
