Question A Service Information

Hello all - I'm a newbie here but I'm hoping to gather some information and then after a while start to contribute to this forum.

I have a 2000 SL 500 with 44K miles on it. I bought it from the original owner about 4 years ago with 5300 miles. The hard top was never even taken off the car when I got it. I have had it maintained by our local Mercedes Dealer since I have bought it. I have faithfully followed the A/B service schedules when the Service Indicator light pops up with the wrench. I am now scheduled for a A service which is, from what I understand, the less expensive one.

Many people say that they just change your oil and give it a quick run through for anywhere from $250 - $600. I am extremely handy with mechanicals on cars and motorcycles but i have no idea how to turn off or reset that service indicator / Wrench light on the 2000 SL 500 series.

Does anyone know how to do this? Am I making a mistake by deviating from the dealership and doing the service myself? I have the actual chart they follow for both A & B service.

Thx - Hedge

Welcome to a really helpful forum. It has save me money on many occasions. For service, do what service-related things you that can also then find a good independent mechanic for the tough and tricky items. As to resetting the wrench light, I think the instructions are in the manual somewhere or try searching the forum.

Thx for the welcome Rocco! I'm a pretty handy guy when it comes to cars and motorcycles. I'm just not a huge fan of paying $300 to have my oil changed and fluids checked by Mercedes when we all know how to do it ourselves. I just don't know how to reset the service wrench.

How to reset.

According to my 2001 operator's manual:

1. Turn key in steering lock to position 2.

2. Within 4 seconds press button (1) twice. (button left side in inst.)

3. The present status for days or distance is displayed.
Within 10 seconds turn the key in the steering lock to position 0.

4. Press and hold button (1), while turning key in steering lock to position 2 again. The present status for days or distance is displayed once more.
Continue to hold the button (1).

After approx. 10 seconds a signal sounds, and the display shows 10 000 miles.

5. Release button.

Regards.
