Looks like it hit a tree or maybe, in Sweden, it failed the Mercedes Elk test...
That's what crumple zones are all about. All the energy went into messing up the front of the car instead of the occupants.
Shortly after the 129 was launched there was a meeting of journalists in Portugal to try the car. One Japanese journo overcooked it and took off, turned the wheel while in the air so that when the *open* car came down to earth, it flipped over on to its roof and slid on the roll bar for more than 200 yards. The guy got out and walked away...

I remember that story.
My wife read it in a magazine and decided that that's THE car she wanted (and got). Cool car and safe...
After driving SL's for many years, I continue to be impressed by the sense of structural strength. Feels like a tank and proved itself a couple of years ago when someone rear-ended the SL at 35-40mph while it was standing, waiting to make a left turn.
No injuries...
