PROBLEMS WITH ROLL BAR '90 500SL

My roll bar with using the dash button will not go up or down. I replaced all fuses, checked rear pump, replaced all fuses, & cleared all codes X-11 box except Code 20. I need to know the code 20 diagnostic information - I think this is where my problem lies. When I press the top button to go down the windows roll down but the roll bar is not operating. I can hear the rear pump operating. Thanxs. Joe

Code 20 means the system recognizes the hard top is installed on the car, so generally it is not a fault.

You can check roll bar codes through socket #7 of the diagnostic connector. You can count the code pulses with a wired LED or by watching the malfunction lamp in the instrument cluster.

Thanxs for the info. bobterry. I did exactly what you suggested and I didn't find any pulses. I had the ignition ON , I grounded socket 7 for a couple of seconds but no pulses came up. Is the procedure the same as clearing the codes in socket 10 for the convertible top?

Yes, the procedure is the same...

If the pump runs when you press the manual control switch, then I believe you likely have a mechanical issue. Did the roll bar automatically deploy? If so, then it must be reset by pressing the manual switch as if to raise the already-raised bar and holding it there for about 10 seconds until a "click" is heard.
