buying advice for a '98 500SL

Hello all...

I am circling my wagons and seriously shopping for a 1997/98 500SL. Seems like bargain pricing for low mileage garage queens, but I've become more of a Porsche guy after selling my '87 560 SEC so don't have any experience with R129's.

Can I ask some input, purchase consideration and general opinions of what to look for and what to avoid during my quest? The only other MBZ I'd consider is a SL55, but to be honest they seem less of a value and I've got that high performance slot filled with my 993

Thanks in advance for the knowledgeable feedback.

If you used to own a 560SEC, then you have an idea how a SL500 would be like. It all depends on what you're after, your driving needs, and your style. Being a late model, the SL would be quite dependable w/ the "bugs" taken care of. If you're into open top, then SL is the choice, unless you're thinking of a 993 Cab. Being the last of the air-cooled Porsche, 993 is very appealing too. I would shy away from the tiptronic tho. Used to own a '97 Carrera w/ tip and soon I got disenchanted w/ the "ease" of it. As mentioned in the beginning, think of your usage, your personality, age, and other factors...which should lead you to the right decision. Good luck and happy searching. w/ smiles Jimmy

I would suggest getting a '99 for the additional power and more robust transmission.
