SL/R129: Newbie Here

1992 Mercedes 300E
Newbie Here
Just wanted to drop in and introduce myself here. I've spend a lot of time online researching Mercedes stuff and this seems to be a fairly active forum as most go.
I have a 92 300E that I love and will drive until it drops. My other car is is a 2000 supercharged Mustang GT Convertible that I can't wait to get rid of. It's fast (460 HP/468 Torque), but geezzz.....what a hunk o' junk. My Mercedes has 140K on it and is tight and solid; the stang has 39K and is falling apart by the day, and half the stuff the dealership won't even touch because of all the mods (like $20K worth...), even with the primo extended warranty that I bought. So....I want another Mercedes, but this time something with some power.
I'm thinking 1996 SL500 because that seems to be the most bang for the buck with the advantages of the newer styling but the price of an older model. I might entertain a 99, but I'm not going to pay an extra $15K unless there is something phenominal about it. I'm shopping for a black on black one with under 50K miles on it for around $30K. I live in southern CA, and there are tons to choose from down here so I think the odds are good that I will get what I want.
Anyway, one thing I did like about the Mustang was the enthuseasts community around it, and I'm hoping to find the same thing here for the SL500. I'd appreciate any feedback that anyone may have on what to look for on what I'm looking for. Thanks!
