SL/R129: 1997 SL500 (missing part)

1997 SL500
1997 SL500 (missing part)
I just purchased a 1997 SL500, this is my first Mercedes.
The car is not running well.
When I opened the hood one thing I noticed is the little round cap on the Module Box is missing.
Then when I looked inside the Module Box, What ever is supposted to be plugged into the round plug below the roud cap is missing.
I have 2 CD parts manuals, but they dont identify the part.
If anyone knows what it is, could you please tell me?
