'99 SL500 engine?
Hello all,
Where can I buy an engine for my '99 SL500? And how much do you think it will cost? I am going to do all the work myself so labor charges are not an issue.
Thanks!
Rick

Did you just get the 99 SL500 recently (or am I hallucinating again? lol)? How many miles did it have? I believe all 5.0 M113 engine will do which I see selling on ebay all the time. I've asked my dealer (just curious) and they wanted ... ready? $40K!

Haha nope I got it about a year ago with 18k miles and its up to...26k now i believe. Good idea with ebay thank you! Umm $40K?! That can't be right...I can buy a V-12 (7.3L if my memory serves me right) from Koenig Specials for 36K euro...

How could the engine completely blow at 26K? What was wrong with it? I am nowhere to be an expert but since you are replacing it, you can get the 5.5L motor (M113) to boot up the power a bit.

Well that's what I'm trying to figure out... With a charged battery, I put in the key and it wont start. Seized?

You don't buy an engine just because it doesn't start LOL (well unless you are Bill Gates nephew). If you describe the symptom more, I am sure people will chime in to help.
When you crank, did it try to crank? Did you check the alternator? When was the last time it started? Did you do anything from the last time it worked? etc.

Sorry about disappearing--school and life has been hectic lately. I recently went and disconnected the battery charger, put in the key...and low and behold it starts and runs fine! I have no idea at this point what was wrong, but I'm hoping nothing. At the moment I am not driving it. I still plan on selling it, so I will do an oil change when spring comes around and drive it for a while. Before I thought it was seized, it was making a horrific clunking, ticking, banging sound and smoking. But now all appears good. Any ideas? Not that I'm complaining, rather, I'm overjoyed it possibly could be fine!
