SL/R129: '01 SL500: Radio Sound Going on & off.....

'01 SL500: Radio Sound Going on & off.....
When I turn the radio on, i hear everything fine for a couple of seconds than it goes quiet for a couple of seconds than i hear it for a couple of seconds and then it goes quiet for a couple of seconds, etc, etc.
If i turn the car off and then turn the car back on, the radio seems to work fine. This just starting happening a few days ago. Anybody have any idea or experience this before?

Had similar symptoms a few years ago. When I turned it on, I would hear static and the sound would slowly increase and all of a sudden evertyhing's worked , until I turned off the engine. Thought it was my amp, but it turned out to be my radio. Replaced it with an Alpine and problem solved.

Ugh. I love this car but it's completely killing my wallet or what's left of it. Thanks. I guess i'll wait until it goes before figuring out replacement (Stock or otherwise).

Okay, the problem may be linked to the CD Changer because when the sounds goes on an off, it does the same for AM, FM and Tape but when I try and switch over to the CD Changer, it just hangs and then goes back to the Radio. Does anybody know if there is a way to disable the CD Changer to see if that might be the problem?

I think you have to reconfigure the fiber optic ring and re-program the head unit in order to disable the CD Changer.
I had a similar situation on my wife's '01 and it turned out to be a loose fiber optic connection at the voice command module. I don't think the module really had anything to do with it but it was just the fact that the D2B fiber ring was intermittently being broken. In your case it could be the CD Changer or the module before or after it in the ring that could be interfering with the head unit. Let me know if you need the docs on the CD Changer wiring and D2B fiber connections and I can dig them up for you.

Thanks. I don't think I'd dare trying to mess with it myself. One thing if it were standard stuff on an american can but Fiber Optic cables on a german car is getting beyond my comfort level. I'll end up doing more damage than good. I'm going to hit up the local automotive audio shop and worst case (gulp), the dealership. Thanks again.

It definitely is the CD Changer as i have disabled it and the problem has disappeared so it sounds like a new CD changer is in order. Thanks for the help.
