SL/R129: climate control / soft top hydraulic cylinder

2000 SL 500
climate control / soft top hydraulic cylinder
I have a 2000 SL500:
1. The fan works occassionally - when it runs, it runs great, but all of a sudden it's temperamental. You can hear it starting to run then slowing down to stop then maybe start up again. Once in a while, the fan will start. Is it likely the climate control module?
2. The hydraulic cylinders in the windscreen pillar (drivers side) leaks. I know from another website how to get access to the cylinder, but is there a way to replace the seals yourself? I read somewhere that a guy did it for nearly no cost, but can't find the site. Are there instructions somewhere?

Re #1, I had the same type of problem in the center vents in my '99, and it turned out to be a vacuum line off of the Y11 distribution block. That said, it could be the CC Unit or the vent controls. Have you run the extensive on-board CC diagnostics? If you don't have them, pm me with an email address and I can send the instructions to you that may help to isolate the problem. The files are too large to post here.
#2 I've seen posts now and then from people offering seals, but many of us use Dennis Ficken, a cylinder rebuilder for this job. His charges are more than reasonable, $50@, fast turnaround (couple days) and a 3yr warranty on performance. His contact info is
