The hard part in installing new hood foams, is the cleaning/removal of previous adhesives and foam. You'd have to provide some sort of plastic cover on top of the engine compartment, to prevent debris dropping into the tight compartment. There plastic clips to attach the foam on the front part of the hood, however, you still have to use a spray adhesive on both the hood and that of the foam itself. BTW, you'd need another set of hands in the installation of the new hood foam, and a good brand of spray adhesive is that of the 3M brand.

Chicky is absolutely correct on everything in his post. Additionally, the best
3M adhesive is this one that is labeled for hoodpads...

http://www.shop3m.com/60455036875.html

Get 2 cans

Additional materials you'll need are-

> 3M general purpose adhesive remover
> Plastic putty knife
> If you're going to try to re-use the 12-14 push pins at the front of the hood, get a panel removal tool to pop them out without destroying them. You can also buy new ones for around $1@
> Paint roller or wallpaper roller

Suggested steps...

Your new pad will be delivered folded. Start by laying the new pad on the ground in the sun to get the folds out.

Cover engine. fenders, front bumper, and lower 1/2 of the windshield. The crumbled pad gets everywhere, and the adhesive remover can harm paint if left to sit for any length of time OR, Disconnect the water feed lines to the windshield washers, mark the bolt positions on the hood hinge, and remove the hood. It makes it sooooo much easier to do this job with the hood off and you can skip the 'cover everything' part.

Remove push pins

Scrape off loose pad material

Apply adhesive remover per the directions on the can, let the stuff work, then continue scraping until the old pad material is gone

Wash down the hood to neutralize the remover...car wash soap is fine.

Read the directions on the 3M spray glue and follow them! Coat the underside of the hood and the pad as explained on the can. Keep in mind that this stuff is essentially contact cement, so when placing, get it right the first time

When dry, start at the front of the hood and replace the pushpins through the holes in the pad into the hood.

Since this will automatically center the pad, starting from the front of the hood, press the new pad into position from the center line out to the edges of the hood. Work your way toward the rear of the hood. When fully attached, use the roller and some pressure to insure a solid bond. Leave the hood open, let the glue set up via the directions and have a few Heineken's to celebrate, and/or clean up the plastic sheeting/tarp and dispose of.

Done correctly, the pad will last for years-

Good luck and have fun

Bob

Queen size bed sheet worked for me. Just take the one far behind in the closet. I guarantee it won't be missed!

ed's right about using a bedsheet to cover the engine, fenders, etc. if you're not going to wash off the adhesive remover (see above)

If you do decide to rinse off the underside of the hood after you scrape the old pad off and remove the adhesive, I found a plastic drop cloth to be a better choice to keep water and any other gunk that came off from going into the engine bay, fenders, etc.
