SL/R129: To Register a Canadian SL500 in Europe?

To Register a Canadian SL500 in Europe?
Does anyone know how I could find out if it is possible (without a bunch of extra cost) to register our 1999 SL500 in Europe to drive on an extended vacation?
We heard from someone last year, when we visited the Canary Islands - that there are rules about the type headlights and window glass ... which for North American cars are very expensive to swap out to meet European standards.
We stopped at a Benz dealer in Spain - the salesman seemed to believe it would be a problem. Maybe he just wanted to sell one of his cars.
Could such complications be necessary for a Benz? Wouldn't MB have manufactured the car to basic European standards?
Our car was first sold in Canada. It has regular headlights and seems to have a EU stamp on the window glass.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

If you want to register a Canadian car, you have to decide where. Rules are different in every country.
I can help you for Belgium, but that would be one of the worst countries => taxes are skyhigh.

No problem driving the car in Europe as long as you aren not trying to register it.
