What type material comes in contact with the top, both at the bottom and the upper portion.

I've got 1 Pano and 1 steel, don't need any scratches on either.

It is a thin cloth type tape that has been applied to the frame by the manufactorer. I never had any issues with it scratching my top, but then I was always very careful when I set the top on it too. You could always augment/replace the material with something else if you wanted. For my own satisfaction, there were times that I put a clean shop rag on the ends to give it a little extra cushion. Again, I never had any issues with the stand though so it wasn't really necessary to do so.
