NEWBIE seeking advice on 500sl

Hi folks, I'm new to this site and have loved Mercedes cars for a long time (although I've never owned one!) The time has come for me to find a project to work on and I need some advice. I've found a 97 SL500 with 88,000 miles.that needs work. The wipers for the headlights are missing and although the interior isn't ripped it is worn and could probably use a facelift. The body and paint are in excellent condition but there is a little tapping from the engine. The owner states that he thinks it's a bad lifter. I've found some parts online but can't seem to find those wipers and interior kit. My other concern is the cost to fix the engine (how much?). Price of the car is 5500.00. The car has the glass top on it (haven't seen the cloth top yet) Any suggestions?

If you can furnish some pics, I think people can help make better comments. Getting parts should be of no consequence. Based on the condition of the interior described and relative to the mileage, the previous owners must not have taken that good care. Also, if they have kept maintenance and upkeep, the car should be in better condition. All in all, I am a little weary. Besides, the price should be lower too. w/ smiles Jimmy
PS. The year, 1997 is a positive note.

The ticking noise from the engine is most likely a bad cam oil tube. You should probally replace them all with the after market metal ones at @ $23 a piece x16 ( currrent factory ones are plastic) plus valve cover gaskets at $35-45 each. So if you are handy you can do it yourself for about $450.
