SL/R129: 1997 SL320 Fuel filter location?

1997 SL320 Fuel filter location?
Could fuel filter and or air filter make check engine light go on? Car passed emissions portion test in California but failed because I had reset CEL and there wasnt enough data. light came on again once after 26 mi and once after 96. Regardless I want to change fuel filter but looked in front of gas tank and did not see it. Is it way up? Thanks.
