Light brown soft top on 99 SL 500?

Hello all,

This will be my first post of, hopefully, many more to come.

I am hunting for a fine SL 500 specimen and came across this ad:
http://www.autobi.com/detail-1999-me...d-7085937.html

While I haven't yet seen the car in person, I found the light brown soft top a little weird.
While I am aware that the dark brown soft top exists (and is pretty rare), I never came across a light brown, almost beige one.

Is it original? Any comments on general state of that car in particular?

Best regards,
Dan

Top looks original to me (I've seen many with that color before). The car looks good (and has SL1 and SL2 packages). $12K is probably a fair price if you can negotiate. Good luck with your searching.

danct,
SCLC is exactly right in his answer...I own this car's 'twin'. The top color, Java (like the interior color) was an optional choice in '99. If the window is clear and stitching intact with no other rips or tears, the top is fine.

If you're serious about this particular car, how will you get a Pre-Purchase Inspection done? I didn't notice anything on the seller's site about this, and I would strongly encourage you to have an independent inspection done either by a local MB Dealer or qualified independent. The inspection may run you $150-$200, and is the best investment you can make. Keep in mind, the most expensive car you will ever own is a 'cheap' Mercedes. Have it checked out before falling in love with it.
