I hate these on and off issues. I have a 1990 500sl that runs perfectly. This year when taken out of storage it began to have a sputtering or acting like it is fuel starved when gas pedal is pressed past about a quarter. Gently pressed it will attain 60-70 mph. One diagnosis is that there was sludge in the fuel. Drained tank, changed fuel filter, no change. It will run for a month without a hitch, then this issue pops up. Any insight, i have a great mechanic who is now clueless. Thanks Kerry

Fuel delivery prob
The same thing is happening in my 1990 300SL. It seems very sporadic and only occurs when accelerating from a stop so far. It works fine when I accelerate slowly but a quick take off is nearly impossible. I just purchased this car as a collector, it has low mileage and the original owner did not drive it very often. As I just got it, I haven't yet taken it in but other than the fuel injectors and pump, I don't know what else it might be. And if your mechanic is stumped, I am not feeling very hopeful. So if anyone else has any ideas, let me know.
