SL/R129: Check Engine Light - Oxygen Sensor

2006 SL600, 2001 S500, 1996 SL320
Check Engine Light - Oxygen Sensor
Had the dreaded check engine light come on this evening in the 1996 SL320, which now has gone an impressive 173,000 plus miles.
Went to an autoparts store and the diagnostic computer showed the following:
Oxygen Sensor
Circuit Slow
Response Bank 1
Sensor 1
Can anyone tell me what's going on, what this does and what's involved in the repair.
Appreciate any feedback.

Yes, one of your O2 Sensors is giving an out of range output. Considering the mileage, probably not unexpected; your may want to consider changing all of them. They wear and become fouled over time; consider the environment they operate in.
Your bigger problem is getting the OBDII to go back to a 'ready' state after repairs. The CEL latched it to a 'not ready' state. My '96 SL600 has a very difficult time getting to 'ready' after a CEL. If your state requires OBDII 'ready' for passing inspections (such as CA), you may have a longer term issue with regard to registration.
