1991 300sl...Help Me!!!

Just found a 1991 300sl. It is very clean inside and out. Haven't seen the soft top but it's supposed to be new. Haven't driven it yet but, started it upo and it ran well. Used car lot asking $6,400. Doesn't sound out of line. I own a 2010 E coupe and have just become a MB fan. Please...is this car worth the asking price (as far as I can tell original paint...cream/yellow).

Even one minor fault could cost thousands to fix. Your best insurance is to hire a MBZ mechanic for $150 for a pre purchase inspection either at the lot or in the shop. Top hydraulics would be a concern, check the level of fluid in the trunk for the top and operate it through several cycles, even one leaky cylinder can run hundreds to have repaired. Check reverse gear for a 2-4 second delay in engaging, that would mean reverse is on it's way out. Windshield wiper operation. Any dash lights stay lit? Price seems decent but a good price can very quickly turn into thousands of repair dollars if you're not careful. A decent MBZ mechanic could help you knock off more from the price than what he charges you. Enjoy your new car!!!

A prepurchase inspection by a knowledgable mechanic is always a good idea.

As for the top hydraulics, even if not leaking, they will eventually. Factor in IIRC $500-600 for rebuilding all the cylinders and a days labor to remove/refit them.

You didn't mention the mileage, but for that price, car shouldn't immediately require any work IMO.

We don't have much to go on, but if it's in great condition all around, I think it's an excellent price. I wouldn't let mine go for under $8K. As others suggest, get expert assurance it doesn't need hydraulics, transmission, suspension, brakes, seals, etc.; look for leaks and rust everywhere. Much depends on what is available wherever you are, and whether you could do your own repairs. Cream yellow is my favorite convertible color, although I haven't seen that particular 300SL hue. With a palomino interior, I'd be all over that baby.
