Exclamation HVAC Display

I have a 1995 SL500 with the old style HVAC (just a small display with the temperature, nothing else). This doesn't seem to work. It only shows randomly used lines instead of, for example, 21 (degree) C. But, it does show a temperature if i hold the REST button it will say 66 (degree) F until "REST" turns on and then it will just show the random lines again. Has anyone heard of this before and what could cause this? Also is there a way to fix this?

Somewhat related....

The backlighting on my display has gone out. Are these little LED bulbs or something that is easily replaced? In daylight I can read the display and everything seems to work just fine. it's just impossible to see anything on the display at night without turning on the inside overhead light.

Thanks

as far as i know it isnt an LED but just a normal incandescent bulb. like all other bulbs they are probably about $6 from the dealer/mechanic. i believe you need special tools to remove the HVAC control unit. it is like one piece, like a cartridge, not just a cover over the switches.

no one has any idea what would cause the weird randomness of the HVAC display? no one seems to have any idea and it foes get fairly annoying for it not working. i never know what temperature it is.
