I have a problem with the sound system in my '94 SL 500. It is an intermittent problem that has gotten progressively worse. Now the system only works once every few weeks. The radio shows what station the radio is tuned to or which CD is selected but the antenna doesn't come up and there is no sound. Anyone have any ideas?

Any sound from the antenna motor? if Yes, then gears are broken. if No , the connector at the backside of the HU may be disconnected or broken wire or internal to HU.
The Becker HU has a known issue with the volume button. My model had several buttons that were "floppy". I used an electrical contact spray, and got better results when I used the volume control. ( spray under the buttons once the faceplate has been removed.)
I replaced the HU with a "pop up" screen Clarion. I would not buy again, because the system is too distracting for an old man. ;( I do enjoy the XM, DVD, I-phone, Bluetooth, however. Crutchfield provided all the stuff and the sound is good.

Thanks for your reply. There is no noise from the antenna and the system works a couple of times every few weeks so I think it must be a bad connection. Can you tell me how to get at the back side of the radio to check it out?

The HU needs a release from two slender metal straps that press a locking flange out of the way. The cost is a few dollars. Ask someone who works on car systems. ( like a teenage neighbor )
Once you start to slide out the HU, be gentle, there are several bundles of wires that plug into the back of the Becker. That is possibly the location of your non function. The harness has a clip(s) to disengage the unit.
Good luck. Some in the forum have modernized the sound system, myself included but I am keeping the unit for the next owner?
