My 1998 SL500 AMG/SP

Hello All,

My apologies in advance if this has been discussed to death already or if I have posted in the wrong section. This site is very large and trying to search out specific info is pretty tough.

I have a 1998 SL500 with both the sport package and the AMG package. I am the 3rd owner and the car has barely over 69,000 miles. I bought the car in early 04 and it had 49,000 miles at that time.

It is my understanding that the AMG option for this year was very rare. Is this true? What does it encompass? I know it has AMG wheels, exhaust, xenon headlights and AMG badge. Any other critical info I should know?

I have recently began to lightly market the vehicle. I would like to get an 05-06-07 SL55AMG or similar BMW M6. Advice on this is appreciated as well.

Here is photobucket link of car pics. Thank you in advance for your time:

as far as i understand other then the different side skirt bottoms, bumpers and what you mentioned there really is no difference.

Not an AMG

Sorry but I don't think you have an AMG model. The AMG version for 1998 is the SL60. It is a 6 liter engine and would have AMG badging on the engine itself. Most likely includes a different exhaust.
What you have is an SL500 with the SL1 option package. It included AMG wheels, different bumpers and rocker panels. The xenon headlights are part of the SL2 option package which also includes seat heaters and the CD changer. There were only 25 SL60s made in 1998 and they are very rare and desirable with about 100 extra hp. The AMG badging on the back of your car is not origional or correct, and can be found on ebay for a couple dollars. I know because I have the same badging on my 99. I want to take it off, but I don't know if it will hurt the paint.

Just noticed your car has xenons, but they are not origional.
If they were you would have heated seats and no headlight wipers.
Your wheels are different from the SL1 wheels too. Maybe the previous owner changed the skirts and bumper. You can run your VIN to see if the car really had the sport package.

Sorta..

The above poster is mostly right. There was no"amg" package for the us, that's just badge engineering. Sport did include the bodywork and wheels and was about a 4k option. However, those are the correct wheels for a 98. They just shouldn't be chrome....on the other hand, if it was from Socal, this was very typical. Two things that make me think it was a dealer or after install---exhaust tip is not OE, and the sport badge is in the wrong place on the side skirt. Yes, bout your only method of confirmation would be the VMI. Still a nice looking 129 you certainly can sell with nice cosmetics, but there really aren't that many late model Benz street cars that are rare these days. Just too many! Good luck in your quest.
