HELP - under the MB logo is a small fluid RESERVOIR (empty) !!!!!

HAPPY PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 2013 everyone!!

Removing the plastic covers for my SL600 for inspection of hydrulic fluid leaks, under the MB logo is a small fluid RESERVOIR (empty!!!).

Can anyone help what is this reservouir for?
What is it's function?
will it cause severe damage if run empty?
What type of fluid suitable for this reservoiuir and it's function.

I think a couple pictures of the reservoir would help. Regardless of what it is, it is definitely not good to drive it empty so I would leave the car home until that fixed
