This may be unconventional, but I just replaced my front pads in one hour.

1997 320SL - removed the two retaining pins & rattle clip, pushed pistons back in, installed SOFT organic pads & sensors. This was the 2nd time - the first time the rotor was scored pretty bad. The soft pads smoothed it out !!!

I'm not racing, but the performance is still fine, especially for a hundred bucks !!!

Yeah I hear you - OMG - brake fluid contaminated, or old, rotors getting thinner, sure, I'd like to see some actual data on the difference...
