Is soft top weather seal necessary?

I had a new soft top installed by the most reputable independent installer in my area who has installed many MB tops. However when I picked the car up I noticed the weather seal between the two sections was not installed. The installer said it was not needed so he did not install it. Question is how will this affect the top, will it leak or have any other adverse affects?

What is the weather seal?
both tops I have had on the 600 have had a passage that a thin hand or stick could pass between the back window section and the top. I thought it was the "air vent" so the top wouldn't bubble!

Soft top

The seal is between the two top sections, across the top of the car, a thin rubber or vinyl strip that runs across the car above the rear window. This is on a 1994 sl320. The later models may not have this seal.
