SL/R129: AC Control Module
Could someone tell me where the AC Control Module is located
on a 98 SL500. Is it something a DIY'r can install?
Hate to pay the dealer $100. an hour for some thing I could do..
Thanks

See my post on "Newer Climate Control" - the module above the radio does it all. To get it out, you need to remove the radio (regular side latches, normally released by inserting a thin object through a slot - I use a small kitchen knife); there are then two plastic latches which need to be pulled down, after which the unit can be pulled out and the cables disconnected.
This unit controls both the air conditioner and the distribution of air throughout the car, taking as input the various control settings and sensor values and controlling the flap valves which determine how air ciculates.

If it is that easy I might try to do it my self. You say the module controls everythig. It would be the thing to change for a blower staying on all the time? I guess it would be a good change since some of my letters on the display do not show up all the time.
Many many,
Thanks for the info!

Ah, I thought you just wanted to know where it is. I don't think this is something you should mess with, although the electronics is quite simple, the clever bit is in the software which determines how the thing reacts when, for example, the temperatur or humidty of the air being taken in changes..
If all you want is to have the fan on, I would have thought setting the maximum fan speed and minimum temperature would do it, but actually I find leaving it on auto is all I need. Mind you, you guys do have more extreme weather than we normally do.

I was hoping to be able to do this myself. My problem is the A/C fan/blower. Even with the key removed I can hear the blower still on. It is bearly on, but it's on.
Since you know about SL500's. Is replacing the top latches above the sun visors a hard item to replace, or just let the dealer replace them.
Thanks for the replies..

If the blower was staying on long term, the battery would go flat and it would be worth removing the air con unit and disconnecting it to see if the blower is still running. To remove it, you need to remove the radio by unlatching it at the sides. There are normally slots or holes you can insert a strong metal object to dis-engage the latch, then pull the radio out and disconnect. Above the radio are two plastic latches inside; pull them down and pull the air con unit out; disconnect the two connectors.
With the aircon control unit out, everything should be dead ignition on or off.
Do you mean the latches that secure the soft top to the top rail of the windshield? Never needed to do it, but they can be replaced from outside the car. Why do yours need replacing? if they are sticking, then flushing out the latches with a cleaning fluid, lightly oiling and working the mechanism shoud do it.
