ipod connection on r129
HI I am wanting to hook up an ipod in a 96 sl500 with out having wires and gadgets all over the interior of car. My research so far tells me that there is some aftermarket wireing harness that hooks on to the stock head but only back as far as 99.
So does anyone know if:
1. The harness will work on a 96 ?
2. Will the 99 head fit the 96 system and work?
3. Is there a stock mb head that will fit the 96 system that has the ipod connection?
Thanks
Dan

Is there an earphone plug in the left hand wall of glovebox? I don't remember exactly which years, but my '03 has an earphone plug in the glove box. On the command center you press the service button and you can then set it to "aux".

Hi
Thanks for the reply but I think the 03 is a more advanced system that the 96, not ear phone jack that I am aware of.
I think that the comand system is at least one maybe two generation up from what I have in the 96. It is a pretty basic system compared to what is available today.
How long have you had your 500E ? I am interested in those cars, maybe after I get the Sl back to its original condition(I just bought it last summer) I can convince my wife I need to add another old car to the garage. In your opinion which year is the best to own?

I am not an expert. I have solved the process with a new head unit. I have found radioman, that rebuilt the bose for the 94 also has upgraded beckers that are modified to accept in a new aux port a verity of inputs , including apple pods, phones or pads. They are not an inexpensive upgrade so I keep the original becker for the next owner and placed a "pop out screen" with all the toys. ( I would not do it again with the Clarion unit, but that is because of the screens position and function with actual driving! )

My '98 500 had an auxiliary input that was just a simple 2-conductor shielded cable with a 1/8" phone plug. It was soldered to the pre-amp outputs in the CM2396 head unit and run up into--and coiled up in--the sunglasses/cell phone compartment:
Connecting it to an audio device, then selecting the CD source and not starting up a CD, was all that was needed to play MP3's, etc. I removed it when I repaired the radio buttons as it was not anything I would ever use...

I would change do a later OEM model... I think audio 30 in US? An then connect with the Dension Gateway. It works great! I fixed it in several R129. Even in an re-imported US-model!
