SL/R129: sl 500 1991 windows issue
rorf was trying to be helpful.
Model years '90-'94 (89-93/94 in some countries) do not have window indexing. Window indexing is where the windows drop about 10 mm when you open the doors. These model years do not need window indexing, unless you install a top with weatherstripping from a newer model year. Is that what happened?
Window "indexing" is needed in newer models (95+) where the window needs to lift under the overhanging seal lip of the top. The doors can open without problem while the window is up, but it would crush the top seal if it wasn't lowered a bit while closing the door. Indexing is achieved by the soft top controller counting the window motor revolutions. As a reference point, windows get "synchronized" in the upper position by holding up the window buttons for several seconds. That resets the ('95+) roadster soft top (RST) controller's memory of where the windows are at in case there was a low or disconnected battery erasing the previous memory.
