Have the R129s become popular with younger owners? Is the R129 cool enough? Powerfull enough? Afordable enough? For younger drivers?

I think I might skew the numbers a little. My wife drives a new to us 2001 SL500 Formula One Edition. She is 51 and drives it daily. I get to drive every once in a while...like to go put gas in it for her or something.
I'm not worried...I always have the 993.
This is an intersting thread...it really gets the average of three things:
1. R129 owners who
2. Are on a web forum (ie: use a computer and the internet, etc) and
3. Are willing to post.
So it may skew towards a younger group and internet savvy group.
OTOH, I think the younger internet savvy group is who is buying the used R129s.
Let's let someone else buy the cool cars new and not drive them much so we can buy them at the bottom of the depreciation cycle!

Can't remember whether I posted here (11 pages is too many to look back on!), but I'm 56. I've had my SL500 2 years, and recently upgraded it to the full AMG specs.
Sometimes I wonder whether the aggressive stance of my upgrade, with staggered wheels and zippy styling:
a) Makes me look younger, or
b) makes me look a total prat trying to reclaim my lost youth.
My wife assures me it's the former. I hope it's not the latter. Maybe I'll try driving much slower so young guys can point me out as "the old rich guy wasting that cool Merc."
Age is in the mind, but most days I'm still 21 in my head.

~1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara. black & silver.
~ex 350SL, 230E, 280E, MX5, Jaguar Daimler and a lot of other makes not nearly as nice.

After adding:

We are at 57 respondents and an average age of 36.5 years.
Is everyone still having fun with their R129?
I personally would like to see new posts on the driving experience and how people appreciate their R129s.

GreenM3.
Now you have the best of both worlds now. A ML430 and a 2002 Sliver Arrow SL500. Rough and sleek.
Let us know if the Sl being a luxury oriented convertible makes up for the loss of HP and other things given up with letting the M3 go.
The average of 58 respondents on the age question is now 36.6 years.

I will be checking my SL into an "Auto Spa" in Southern California.
When I pick it up it will have an Intercooled Kleeman Supercharger.
500HP/498 ft lbs of torque. A poor man's SL55.
That should bridge the performance gap between my M3 and the Silver Arrow. Acceleration-wise.
I have noticed that it is much easier to drive in a spirited fashion in the SL. Stomp on the gas and go. Lots of torque. The electronic stability/traction control is amazing.
I love the V8. cruising along at 1500 rpm and having the torque to GO when you want to.
No regrets. Love driving with the top down. My wife loves the car.
The Kleeman stuff will make it more "punk proof", though.
I love whacking guys in their Mustangs, etc. in my M3.
There is just no comparison between a BMW and a nice Benz IMHO. I considered a new convertible M3 with SMG II.
That SMG is the WORST of both worlds. It feels like driving with someone who doesn't know how to drive a stick... unless you are drag racing.
I will end up with a perfect 500HP SL500 with 30k miles for about the same price as a new M3. Much more car in my opinion..

I am 48 years of age and have owned a 97 SL320 since last October, but having one of the rainiest seasons of my lifetime, I've not had much chance to put it on the road. I've only gone topless twice since last October. Come on warm weather!!!

I remember when I was at college and my dad picked me up in his at the time SL60 it was a perfect summers day and it must of been the hot girl appreciation day either that or the SL attracted them to it. I loved that car so much. The whole solidness of it the leather flaps that cover the door pockets, the leather dash everything especially the engine and the pose factor of it even as a passenger. Anyway i'm gonna shut up now and congratulate you all on owning an SL. The thing with the SL is whatever the age, model or shape everyone loves them and they will always be the attention seeking car with 100% pose factor.

Gosh, when I was 18, my decision on what I drove depended on large measure on whether I thought it would help me to get laid... Maybe, as I'm staring 50 in the face, I don't understand what's what for teenagers these days but I would doubt a ten year old R129 would hack it in that department.
