Been hunting for a SL600 for about 4 months now. Was originally gonna buy it for my BF, but he says he doesn't want it. So I guess I'll keep the '97 I'm picking up in about 2 weeks. I'm 39.
I've always loved MBs, and owned a 190D about 10 years ago. Talk about leaving a bad taste!! Have had Cadillacs since. I've loved the 600s for a long time but have never been able to afford one. So here I go!

He doesn't want it cuz he doesn't like it when I give him expensive gifts. It makes him "uncomfortable".
Shoot, if someone wanted to give me a MB I'd say BRING IT! And make it SHINY!

This is a guy thing. It probably means he doesn't like you (NO, just kidding -- he probably feels insecure around all those cigars ).
Just keep it and have fun! You will love the car so much. Read some of the posts about how in-love we all are with our R129's. Please post pictures and details after you pick it up (mileage, options, etc.). Welcome to the forum.

Well hell, if he doesn't like me, then we shouldn't be engaged....
He's a major cigar smoker and has 3 55 gal coolerdors under his bed....not that I had anything to do with that. His loss is my gain, the way I see it. I'm sure I'll be in love with the car - best I've , or he, have ever had. I've been doing lots of reading, y'all are sick with it, and I expect I will be too.
Thanks for the welcome. And sorry for the thread hijack.

Two Kinds of Attention
I bought my 95 SL500 a month ago and I noticed that I get two kinds of reactions...apreciation and jealousy. I get appreciative nods and glances often but I also get many people that feel they have to challange me, like cutting me off or passing me only to swoop in front and slow down. Hicks mostly....
I am 41 and I can honestly say, the younger ladies DO appreciate it so it must be hip again.

1998 SL500
Age related
reading the entries of how old are current SL500 owners I feel rather old here...59yrs old and this is my first MB ( "Merc" as I used to call them as a kid in the UK ) I think I have found the perfect car....great looks but not too flashy, powerful but easy to control and I hope relaible for many years to come. I bought a 1998 model, smoked silver with the panorama roof with a measly 17000 miles only on it driven in the summer by a Catholic priest...really. I think this will be a classic car for many years to come. I will be tempted to add a 2005 model in 5 years or so as I really like the concept of the retractable hardtop. I actually have not driven the car with the roof off yet.
I think this format for sharing info, useful and useless is a fine idea.

I looked at the Only America Sports car, the Corvette, ( Junk) Nissan 350Z, too cheap, and came back to the SL-500. After much research I found a 97 reasonably priced with low miles and hence I now have the car of my Dreams.
These are so affordable compare a late 90's SL. Low miles to a new car...no choice buy the SL!
I am 50 and hope to push the average back to where it should be,this is not a kids car!

Scorpian, with the average age in the mid to upper 30's I don't think there are too many "kids" here. I expected the average age to be much older but found it pretty cool that so many younger folks appreciate this fine automobile. I would venture a guess that the average age of SL owners is much older than this forum indicates because forum users are generally a younger crowd.
Whatever the average is, it's "where it should be." I say sit back and enjoy the ride young and old alike! We're all in this together.......

I'm 42 and have owned my 99 SL500 for 4 years now. I have thought of purchasing a 2003 for the updated look, usually when I get bored during the winter, then spring comes, I put back on the summer AMG 18" rims, detail it, take off the hard top, and get excited all over again every time I drive the car.

Waited a long time for a nice SL-500. 50 Years old, checked corvettes and 350-Zs, got the SL-500. The newer 230 style does not appeal to me. Looks too cheap , ala Chrysler-ish.
Warm here this week, almost time to get in back on the road and enjoy!
