500SL normal operating temp

What temp do you guys see in normal use on a hot day?

My car runs about 100 Celcius, goes up a bit above that in bumper to bumper traffic and a bit lower in highway cruising. Is this normal? BTW, 2 aux fans are running fine.

Im thinking its kinda high since my 93 E420 which has basically the same engine stays below 80 degrees most of the time. It only reaches 80 or 90 in extreme traffic.

2 to 85 degrees celcius.

I've never noticed it going higher than that range.

Lightbulb info.

Hi there,

I think that you have a problem with your temp reading....
85 here...

I had the same problem before, there are two stages for the 2 aux fans to work, one is one 85 degrees and the other is on 100..

There was a loos connection which affected the first stage of the aux to work and they fixed it. im not sure what they did, it was 5 years ago. I remember telling me keep you AC ON cause the 2 aux fans will work with the AC. (or even you might have some problem withthe AC make sure it cools ok)...

Regards...

Try this

I agree with AMG, in the city traffic all my Benzes are critical with the temp, so i've taked a very cheap and very practical solution, I've installed in all a little switch that connects the electrical fans when i want, and it works! Try it! it's effective! But more effective in the other Benzes (little motors (2.6, 2.8 and 3.0) that in the R129.

I live in a tropical country, I have already modified things so that my 2 aux fans come on at the high setting as soon as you turn on the engine. The lower speed setting was basically useless since a few minutes after starting a totally cold engine, the temp increases right away and switches the fans to the high speed mode. So I figured to just keep it on the high speed all the time.

The temps still go past 100 in traffic.
