Have you checked yout throttle body? I had those symptoms and found out that the teeth of the throttle control rack inside the TB were broken. I had to replace the TB.

When mine went, I could hear a distinct rattling sound coming from it, even when at idle. I didn't need to do anything further.

I guess that you could remove your air filter box, have someone step on the accelerator while the transmission is in park and look to see if the butterfly valve is opening as it should.

Perhaps a member with more expertise than I possess could respond with a more definitive test procedure.

I never want to take away the best "catch all" for R 129 owners, but very few of us experienced the wiring harness nightmare and by 96 it was the dirty secret sweep under the "rug"
Many fuel system components may be part of the engine malfunction, and yes almost all are part of the electronic system. The latest round of fuel issues for my 12 cylinder came from the throttle control and E gas module. I went for new parts from Benz, but rebuilds may be a more economical route. They have now been replaced twice during my ownership ( 16 years ) The primary issue may have been a small element in the throttle body that over energized the E Gas module, causing its breakdown.
Hope my path gives you insight into the non harness issues that may be presenting with your engine power and warning light show!

Thank you for the response.... Stupid question perhaps; but how did you find out your module was bad & what was the process of elimination. I want my toy back so bad.
I can't even find a Chilton's for the 97 sl r129.
