Yes the hard top is removeable. Usually on a seasonal basis.
It is a two person job to do it manually.
You then put the hard top into storeage untill you want to put it on again in the late fall or early winter season.
Carts are available to stand the top up vertically and to roll it around on castors. It doesn't take up too much space.
Hoists are available that would make it a one person job . The top is then stored horizontaly on the hoist? I've never seen one.
The soft top is always on board. And of course is raised and lowered hydraulically in 16 seconds.
Part of the fun of driving the SL is the experience of feeling the power and acceleration. The SL500 was quick in it's time (0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds).
That is not so fast off the line by today's standards.
The SL500 has lots of get up and go at 2,500 rpm and higher. Great passing power.
At 4,000 pounds, the SL is a heavy car. I'd say you need the SL500 to have the 300 HP and 340 ft-lbs of torque working for you.
Mercedes Benz company web pages in each country have pre-owned cars for sale. Their asking prices will give a pretty good idea of what the SL with various mileage go for.
