SL/R129: Phone beep sound when I start my 2000 SL500

Phone beep sound when I start my 2000 SL500
Any idea why I get a two or three second tone that sounds like a beep for a phone every time I start the car? How do I get rid of this annoyance. Note, I don't have the OEM phone installed in the car.

Does your car have a "voice control" stalk on the top right of your steering column? If so, your car may have one component of the installed phone system. I had a 2000 SL600 with this stalk, but no phone. It also had a phone tone upon startup.

Thanks for your reply! I just noticed there is a nub or a plug where the stalk used to be! What should I do now? Pry it out to cut some wires or is there a more elegant way to do this? Is there a fuse I can pull that will do the the trick?
