How do I change the shift knob on a 91 R129?
So I went to change the shift know on a 91 sl500 and it doesn't have the cam lock I'm used to seeing on benzes. It doesn't appear that the knob can be removed from the shaft.
What's the procedure for changing the knob? Will any mercedes knob fit? Or does the knob have to be specific to an R129?

the early SL's dont have the conical piece as the shift knob and shaft are attached toether in one piece.
I believe you have to remove the center wood trim in order to get the end of the shaft. This is so because the assembly can only be removed by unscrewing the end of the shifter shaft.. you will have to unscrew the entire shifter assy.
thus if you want to change knobs, you will have to remove the knob and shifter shaft..
hope it made sense...

Thanks for the info, it made perfect sense :0) I saw that bold holding the shaft on but wanted to know if there was a way of just getting the knob off. I guess I'll see if there's an updated shaft that will let me use the newer shift knobs.
